Amy Aquino - Queen of Recurrence
Amy Aquino (Ak wee' no) represents the essence of what this feature is all about, as she may hold the record for most recurring characters being played concurrently at any one time. Although her stock has certainly risen since this profile was first introduced, her career has maintained a steady pace.
Since earning her MFA at the Yale School of Drama in the 80’s, Amy has split her acting career between New York and LA. On the East coast, she worked with director Daniel Sullivan and playwright Wendy Wasserstein in her Pulitzer Prize winning "The Heidi Chronicles" on Broadway, and at Lincoln Center in Wasserstein’s haunting last play "Third". She also appeared in Jonathan Tolins’ "Secrets of the Trade" at Primary Stages, and Debra Laufer’s "End Days" at the Vineyard Playhouse. On the West coast, theater audiences have seen her in last year’s "12th Night" at San Diego’s Old Globe, "Living Out" at the Mark Taper Forum; South Coast Rep’s production of "A Feminine Ending" by Sarah Treem (TV’s "The Affair") and Steve Martin’s The Underpants at the Geffen.
By the time Amy landed her current role as Lt. Grace Billets in Amazon’s hit "Bosch", she was already a film and TV vet. She had appeared in films such as "Working Girl", "Moonstruck", "Boys on the Side", "The Singing Detective", "White Oleander", "A Lot Like Love", and "In Good Company". On television she was a regular in the critically acclaimed "Brooklyn Bridge" and "Picket Fences", and made countless guest appearances, including recurring roles on "Glee", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "ER", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "The Mentalist", "Freaks and Geeks", "Harry’s Law", "CSI", "Brothers and Sisters", "Big Love", "Felicity", and "Being Human".
Amy earned a BA in Biology from Harvard University, and served as an officer of the Screen Actors Guild from 1994 to 2004, taking part in contract negotiations and spearheading a complete revamping of its communications. Elected SAG’s second highest ranking national officer in 2009, she was instrumental in bringing about merger with sister union AFTRA in 2012, resulting in her appointment as founding Co-Secretary Treasurer of the new SAG-AFTRA, and reelection to that position last year. She serves on the Boards of SAG’s Pension and Health Plans and of Arts for LA, and was on the founding boards of Girls Inc. LA and the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council, and served on the Hollywood Community Police Advisory Board. She recently joined the board of Arts for LA, a group that has for ten years advocated to make the arts accessible to all Angelenos.
Amy lives in a 100-year old bungalow in Hollywood which she and her husband, financial advisor Drew McCoy, have restored and had landmarked. She is an active strategist and spokesperson in LA’s historical preservation movement, and, as vice-president of her neighborhood association, is preparing her Old Hollywood neighborhood for Historical preservation status.
Amy’s family also includes her dog Lucy, who is over 15 and still actually brings in the newspaper – every day.
In this business, it’s all basically arbitrary. You may be cast for your talent and you may not. Period. So keep an eye on what you want from life and if you’re getting from acting, great. If not, move on to something that will give it to you."
